Java Institute Organised the Java World Congress in Sri Lanka - 2010

The Java World Congress on ICT for Sustainable Development was held for the first time in Sri Lanka on November 19, 20, and 21 in Colombo at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre.

This initiative was a multi-stakeholder partnership programme that focused on the current decade (2010-2020). The website pertaining to this initiative (www. javaworldcongress.org) was launched by the Minister of Economic Development, Honorable Basil Rajapaksa.

In August 2010, the Sri Lankan Team of the Java World Congress met the President of the country, Honorable Mahinda Rajapaksa, and he assured them support to make this event a success.

The theme of the World Congress is integrating ICT to build and strengthen the social capital to achieve the United National Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Experts were presented papers on how ICT could be utilized to solve social issues in various fields such as education, food, health, environment, livelihoods, infrastructure, sports, science and technology.

Delegates from various countries such as the USA, the UK, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Singapore, India, Vietnam, Japan, South Africa, Russia, Greece, and the UAE participated in order to conduct presentations at this congress.

The Java Sri Lanka 2010 Computer Software and Education Exhibition, under the theme "e-Parapure Viskam Dakma", was held at the SLECC along with the world congress. This exhibition aimed to promote the scheme "ICT for All and ICT for All Villages".
